Preparing SMART Solutions! (Position Paper General Feedback)
Hello, Delegates!
Hope that all has been going well! Can you believe there are only 3 days left until BMUN LXIX? Time flies so quickly!
We have finished grading all of your position papers and first of all, we would like to thank you all for the immense time and effort you put into creating such well-written papers. They left us thoroughly impressed! We are so excited to see you all bring these papers to life at conference and engage with one another over the creative and strategic solutions proposed.
As you get into your final preparations for this weekend, we would like to provide you all with some pointers and pieces of advice to consider for your proposed solutions. These were compiled based on the most common mistakes and weaknesses in your solutions. Feel free to make edits to your papers within the next few days or apply these tips during moderated caucuses as your write resolutions with your fellow delegates.
- Make sure solutions are reflective of your country's position on the issue.
- Although we want to encourage all delegates to come up with the best solutions possible to fight against international violations of human rights, the solutions proposed by your country should not be too far out of line with something that would realistically be considered by your country. This is where having a strong background on your country's position is extremely helpful. Being able to contextualize possible solutions in comparison to solutions adopted by your country in the past, where their priorities are on this issue compared to other items on their international agenda, and recent developments will give you clear guidelines from which to edit and prune your solutions to become as attainable as possible.
- Time!
- This may be one of the easier tips to take into account! As a reminder, the five elements of a great solution can be remembered with the acronym SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time. The last element, time, means that it's important to propose a timeline for possible implementation. This could be as simple as adding a sentence that encourages countries to adopt a new resolution by the end of 2022. Setting these types of deadlines, encourage implementation and provide a point for accountability to take place- a key weakness in international action.
